Supporting Families. Strengthening Communities.

FASS (Family Addiction Support Service) has a long and proud history of supporting families and individuals affected by addiction in Glasgow. Our roots go back to the 1980s, when a group of concerned parents came together in response to the growing drug problems affecting their communities. Recognising the profound impact addiction could have not only on individuals but also on their families, friends and loved ones, they set out to create a service where people could find understanding, support and reassurance during some of the most difficult periods of their lives.

Originally established as The Glasgow Association of Family Support Groups, the organisation was formally constituted in 1986. What began as a community-led response to a growing social issue developed into a valued and trusted service, helping countless families and individuals navigate the challenges associated with addiction.

From the beginning, our purpose has been to ensure that families do not have to face these challenges alone. Addiction can affect every aspect of family life, often bringing feelings of worry, isolation, uncertainty and stigma. We recognise that behind every person experiencing addiction, there may be family members and loved ones who also need care, understanding and support. Our work is built around acknowledging these experiences and providing a compassionate, non-judgemental space where people feel heard and valued.

Recognising Our Contribution

In 2003, our commitment to the community received national recognition when the Association was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award for Voluntary Service by Groups in the Community. This award acknowledged the valuable contribution of voluntary groups and the positive difference they make to the lives of others.

Although this recognition was a significant milestone, FASS had already established a strong reputation across Glasgow's diverse cultural and local communities. Our history reflects the determination of the parents, volunteers and supporters who understood the importance of standing alongside families affected by addiction and who helped build the foundations of the service we provide today.

Becoming FASS

In June 2008, The Glasgow Association of Family Support Groups became FASS – Family Addiction Support Service.

This change of name reflected the changing landscape of addiction services, our developing approach to family support and the introduction of a referral system encompassing both drug and alcohol-related issues. It also represented our continued commitment to responding to the changing needs of individuals, families and communities.

While our name and services have evolved, the principles that inspired our beginnings remain at the centre of everything we do: compassion, respect, understanding and the belief that people deserve support without fear of judgement.

Supporting Families Through Change

We understand that addiction is rarely an experience that affects just one person. Families and loved ones may face emotional strain, relationship difficulties, uncertainty and the challenges associated with stigma. Finding the right support can make a meaningful difference, helping people feel less alone and better equipped to cope with the circumstances they face.

FASS exists to recognise these experiences and to ensure that family members and individuals affected by addiction have a service they can turn to. We believe that every person's circumstances are different and that support should be approached with sensitivity, dignity and respect.

We also recognise the importance of creating an environment where people feel comfortable seeking help. Reaching out can be difficult, particularly when families have spent a long time managing their concerns privately. By offering a welcoming and understanding service, we aim to help people take that step and feel supported throughout their journey.

Looking to the Future

Building on a history that began more than 35 years ago, FASS remains committed to continuing and enhancing the valuable service established by those pioneering parents in the 1980s.

As the needs of our communities continue to change, we intend to build on our experience, strengthen our approach and continue providing meaningful support to families and individuals affected by addiction. We recognise the importance of working alongside our communities and responding to the challenges people face with empathy, professionalism and care.

Our story is one of community action, resilience and a shared belief that no family should have to face addiction alone. We are proud of our heritage, grateful to those who have helped shape our journey and committed to carrying this work forward.

Our commitment remains the same: to support families, challenge the stigma surrounding addiction and ensure that compassion and understanding remain at the heart of everything we do.
